LEWISBURG - Evangelical Community Hospital has acquired SUN Orthopaedic Group Inc., it was announced Friday.

Under the partnership, SUN Ortho's staff combines with Evangelical's staff and facilities, including eight surgical suites, according to a press release.

Patients will have access to Evangelical's Center for Orthopaedics, where procedures for the muscular and skeletal systems are performed.

The acquisition moves SUN Ortho under the direction of the Evangelical Medical Services Organization and the transition of the practice is expected to be completed by the end of 2013.

"The demand for orthopaedic surgery continues to grow as people live longer and want to stay active and healthy. By officially bringing SUN Ortho into our family, we are confident about meeting that demand and offering our orthopaedic patients the continuum of care that's so vital for recovery," said Michael O'Keefe, president and CEO of Evangelical Community Hospital.

Evangelical and SUN Ortho have a long relationship. SUN Ortho is a team of eight board-certified orthopaedic surgeons specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of bone and joint disorders and sports injuries. They offer expertise in orthopaedic surgery, reconstruction, sports medicine, musculoskeletal injuries and physical therapy.

In 2005, a partnership was formed where Evangelical and SUN Ortho began the joint replacement program. Since the inception, the two organizations have collaborated on nearly 3,300 total hip, knee and shoulder replacements on patients between the ages of 24 and 92.

In January, Evangelical opened its Center for Orthopaedics, expanding its orthopaedic focus. The specialty unit is also available for unplanned emergent needs such as fractures and sports injuries.
