Police throughout the area will be on the lookout for aggressive drivers today as part of a statewide wave continuing through Aug. 16.

Local police departments taking part in the effort include Danville, Mahoning Township, Coal Township, Mount Carmel Township, Point Township, Northumberland and Shamokin City Police, and state police at Stonington and Milton.

Motorists are reminded to keep their distance from drivers who speed, tailgate and run red lights.

Aggressive drivers stopped by police will receive a ticket.

Participating police departments wrote 142,013 aggressive-driving related citations in 2011.

According to PennDOT, 53 people were killed in 2011 in crashes involving at least one aggressive driving behavior.

Aggressive-driving enforcement is a part of the Pennsylvania Aggressive Driving Enforcement and Education Project and is funded by PennDOT's statewide investment of $2.3 million in federal funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
