SHAMOKIN - City police have arrested a convicted sex offender who failed to register with Pennsylvania State Police and was wanted in New Jersey for a probation violation.

Officers were tipped off that Thomas Weinstein Jr., 28, was allegedly residing at 20 S. Franklin St. in the city since Jan. 4. He was arrested at 7:24 p.m. Monday at that residence.

Cpl. Darwin Tobias III charged Weinstein with one count of failure to comply with registration requirements. He was arraigned by the on-call district judge, Benjamin Apfelbaum, and committed to Northumberland County Prison, Sunbury, in lieu of $130,000 cash bail.

Weinstein is classified as Community Supervision for Life as a condition of his parole in New Jersey, but failed to register both in New Jersey and with Pennsylvania, according to a criminal complaint.

New Jersey online court records show that he plead guilty to aggravated sexual assault and was sentenced in November 2004 to six years imprisonment and five years parole. He is wanted by the Woodbridge Township Police Department for a probation violation related to the case, police say.
