KULPMONT - In an effort to stop diabetes and as part of its mission, The Saint Pauline Center has designed the symbol "D" card (shown at left) for distribution to the public. All donations raised by the card, $1 each, will be used to provide education and diabetes management for children and adults.
Twenty-six million children and adults in the United States have diabetes and another 79 million Americans have pre-diabetes and are at risk for developing Type 2 diabetes. The Saint Pauline Center is therefore committed to helping people understand the risks for the disease.
Diabetes is problematic, but when caught early, it can be managed through diet and exercise control.
As part of the effort to "Stop Diabetes," the Saint Pauline Center operates "Camp Pauline," a day camp for children with diabetes, and conducts other seminars on diabetes.
Camp Pauline offers ways for children with Type 1 diabetes to come together, learn and share stories with other children. At the camp, counselors know how to manage nutrition, exercise and insulin injection. Brochures for the camp, scheduled for July, will be available in early 2013.
Bob Greco, of the center, said diabetes is a large concern nationwide, affecting many people. Early diagnosis by a physician ensure proper treatment that prevents complications and extends lives.
The Diabetes "D" card will be available to all individuals, businesses and organizations that want to help to make the public aware of the disease. These cards may be picked up at the center or they may be obtained by calling 373-3216. They will also be available at area businesses.
