TREVORTON - Work on the First Street culvert project will begin in the near future after the Zerbe Township Supervisors approved a bid for it Monday night.
Supervisors Michael Schwartz, Mike Mazer and Gene Geise voted unanimously to award the contract to Mid-State Paving, of Paxtonville, at a cost of $71,801.65, the lowest of three bids opened Aug. 6 for the project.
The award is contingent on Mid-State submitting the proper performance and payment bonds, insurance documentation and a signed contract.
Zerbe Township originally submitted a cost estimate of $72,205 to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which will reimburse the township.
The construction will alleviate flooding concerns in the First Street area and repair damage which occurred during the Flood of 2011.
Plans also moved forward on Zerbe Township's other major construction project, the new wastewater treatment plant set to be in operation in December 2014.
At Monday's meeting, supervisors approved an ordinance which guaranteed the $2.9 million sewer revenue promissory note, the amount the township will be receiving from PennVEST via a low income loan, along with a $1.1 million grant for the project.
Supervisors also passed a resolution, part of the closing documents for the PennVEST loan, which states quarterly sewer rates will increase for customers to pay for the loan. The amount of the increase has not been determined yet.
Bids for the new plant will open at a special public meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 21 at the municipal building.
In other business, the board ratified a new one-year contract extension for township police chief Robert John, keeping him employed until Aug. 10, 2014.
The contract calls for a three percent salary increase, but no changes to the number of vacation and personal leave days.
The chief thanked everyone for their support of the National Night Out event held Aug. 6 which raised $963.60, and Kristi Stiely for her help in planning the event.
Supervisors reported five applicants have expressed interest in the part-time police officer position.
Permission was granted to the Line Mountain School District to use the foundry parking lot on Aug. 23 and Sept. 16 to alleviate parking concerns during Kindergarten orientation and open house events at the Line Mountain Elementary School.
