DANVILLE - A Kulpmont woman died Saturday from injuries suffered in a car accident Tuesday on Route 61 near Coal Township Wal-Mart.
Hazel Irene Rooney, 73, had been listed in critical condition at Geisinger Medical Center from the time of her admittance through Saturday afternoon.
She was a passenger in a southbound Chevrolet Malibu driven by her son, Howard Splitt Sr., of Mount Carmel, that collided with a northbound Chevrolet Blazer that had crossed into their lane of travel about 3 p.m.
Coal Township Police say the Blazer's driver, David Ratzlaff, 60, of Shamokin RD, swerved into the southbound lane to avoid a rear-end collision in the northbound passing lane near the rear entrance to Ranshaw.
The Malibu's front-end collided with the Blazer's passenger side.
Ratzlaff's wife, Marilyn, 60, was trapped in the Blazer and had to be extricated by emergency personnel.
The Ratzlaffs and Splitt were all treated for injuries at Geisinger and released.
Rooney's death marks the third fatality from area motor vehicle accidents last week.
Charles D. Carl, 92, and Ronald E. Matejick, 76, both of Gordon, were killed in a head-on crash Monday on Route 54 on Natalie Mountain near Strong. They were passengers in a sport-utility vehicle driven by their relation, Tina Alexander, 40, of Gordon, who was released Thursday from Geisinger.
The driver of the pickup that struck the SUV, Glenn Meredith, 52, of Mount Carmel, remained in critical condition Sunday at Geisinger, according to a nursing supervisor.
Two area women injured in separate crashes Saturday remained in serious condition Sunday at Geisinger.
Cheryl Tanney crashed a Chevy Aveo about 10 a.m. on Route 54 near Bear Gap Road in Ralpho Township. Ralpho Township Police provided no information on the crash.
Renee Austerberry, 27, of Shamokin, crashed a Oldsmobile Alero on Route 61 north on the Frackville grade between Saint Clair and Frackville in Schuylkill County.
