LITTLE MAHANOY TOWNSHIP - A passenger in a sport utility vehicle that crashed into an embankment Saturday afternoon along snow-covered Sunshine Road near Route 225 was flown to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, while another passenger also was hospitalized.

The driver of the vehicle escaped injury in the 1:30 p.m. crash.

All three occupants are reportedly from Zerbe Township.

State police at Stonington did not have any information about the accident or the identity of the driver and passengers when contacted Saturday afternoon.

The accident, which remains under investigation, occurred approximately three miles south of Trevorton.

According to reports at the scene obtained by The News-Item, the operator, who is believed to be in his 30s, was driving the SUV downhill when he reportedly lost control of the vehicle on the snow-covered road, causing it to exit the right side of Sunshine Road and crash nearly head-on into an embankment.

A front-seat passenger, who is believed to be in his mid-50s, was initially taken by ambulance to nearby Shingara's Farm, where a

landing zone was set up by members of Herndon Fire Company for Life Flight helicopter, which flew him to Geisinger.

A back-seat male passenger was transported by Trevorton Ambulance to a local hospital.

One of the occupants had to be extricated from the vehicle, according to reports at the scene.

The SUV was demolished and towed from the scene by Steve's Auto Body of Trevorton.

Also assisting were Trevorton firefighters and personnel from Trevorton Ambulance, Coal Township Rescue Squad and AREA Services Ambulance.

The scene was cleared at 2:48 p.m.
