More than 1,000 PPL Electic Utilites customers in the Herndon area lost power for approximately three hours Wednesday morning because of a transformer explosion at an intersection.
Lower Mahanoy Township Fire Chief Craig Gilligan reported crews were called to the area of Routes 147 and 225 at approximately 1 a.m. Wednesday for a transformer fire that had knocked out power to the area.
"When we arrived on scene, the fire was pretty much out," Gilligan said. "There were char marks on the ground from the pieces of equipment that had fell."
PPL spokesman Rich Beasley reported that approximately 1,200 customers were without power due to the failed transformer from 1 a.m. when the incident occurred until power was fully restored at 4:40 a.m. Wednesday.
