Feb. 6 - Local fans cheered on Southern Columbia graduate Henry Hynoski, of Elysburg, who was the starting fullback for the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLVI. He caught two passes and recovered a fumble to help the Giants win 21-17 over the New England Patriots.

Feb. 8 - Police were on the lookout for the suspect who held up a man making a drive-up night deposit at First National Bank in Shamokin.

Feb. 8 - The area was in mourning for former Northumberland County Judge James J. Rosini, his wife, Patricia, deputy director of the county Area Agency on Aging; his brother, William J. Rosini, co-owner of Shamokin Filler Co., and William's girlfriend, Deborah A. Korbich, of Elysburg, who were killed in a two-vehicle crash near Everglades City, Florida.

Feb. 10 - Two World War II veterans were awarded medals more than 60 years after they served their country during a ceremony in Mount Carmel.

Feb. 11 - Ten crashes were reported in a two-hour period as the area's first real snowstorm of the season produced snow squalls that quickly dropped an inch of snow and limited visibility.

Feb. 13 - More than 180 people crowded the Southern Columbia Area School Board meeting, rallying over concerns that the music department was on the chopping block.

Feb. 14 - Ralpho Township supervisors presented resident Henry Hynoski with a plaque and renamed part of a road "Henry Hynoski Boulevard" for his accomplishments as an NFL player and Super Bowl champion.

Feb. 21 - Traffic was rerouted and casino-goers were shaken up after a Jeep Cherokee collided with a King Coal Tours motorcoach in Kulpmont. The Jeep driver suffered a leg injury, while six of the 19 passengers on board the bus had minor bumps and bruises.

Feb. 21 - Shamokin officials discussed news the city would have to pay back $500,000 to the state Department of Economic and Community Development and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development due to misappropriation of funds dealing with the Community Development Block Grants in 2003, 2004, and 2005.

Feb. 23 - The state Supreme Court rejected a motion to hear an appeal from Red Gold Enterprises on the validity of mortgages on the Center City Apartments building. With the ruling, Shamokin Housing Authority director Ron Miller said the authority would enter court proceedings to "secure the building."

Feb. 24 - A high-speed pursuit through Elysburg and Shamokin ended when the driver Greg Demage, 30, of Jim Thorpe, shot and killed himself behind the wheel of the stolen Cadillac he was driving on Route 61 near McDonald's in Coal Township. Demage was a person of interest in a double homicide shooting in Carbon County earlier that day.
