SHAMOKIN - Three people suffered minor injuries Sunday afternoon when a car crashed into the side of Doogie's Pizzeria at 500 Bear Valley Ave., Shamokin.
Patrolman Shane Mowery reported Jose Santiago, 55, who resides in an apartment above the pizza shop, was turning left off Bear Valley Avenue onto Montgomery Street at about 2:30 p.m. when his foot reportedly slipped off the brake, causing his blue 1996 Subaru to accelerate, mount a curb and strike the side of the building. Santiago was able to back up and park the car across the street, Mowery said.
Santiago suffered a back injury. His sister, Mirta Santiago, 52, of Allentown, experienced leg pain, while his niece, Veronica Ramos, 34, also of Allentown, had a busted lip. All three were transported by AREA Services Ambulance to Geisinger-Shamokin Area Community Hospital, where they underwent emergency room treatment before being released.
The car sustained extensive damage to its driver's side front and was towed from the scene by Anthracite Towing.
Also assisting at the scene were Patrolman Mark Costa, city fire chiefs Bruce Rogers, John Klembara and Jason Zimmerman and fire police.
