TREVORTON - Those with recreational vehicles or boats parked on Zerbe Township streets should prepare to move them or face a citation.
At a meeting Monday night, Zerbe Township supervisors directed police chief Robert John to hand deliver letters to the homes of those in violation, asking them to move the vehicles within 24 hours.
"We have an ordinance on the books and it should be enforced," board chairman Michael Schwartz said.
According to the ordinance, all recreational vehicles, such as campers and motor homes, and boats must be off public streets between Sept. 15 and April 15. All three supervisors agreed that the ordinance needs to be amended to bring it up to date, but for now, it must be enforced unilaterally.
"The ordinance states that between April 15 to Sept. 15, campers can only be parked on the street for 72 hours," supervisor Mike Mazer said. "We have people that camp on weekends and we should amend the ordinance to allow them to park on weekdays in those months."
The issue came to light last month when a resident complained about a pontoon boat being parked across the street since June, calling it a nuisance.
Rather than just cite one person, the supervisors said warnings, then citations, will be issued. For those with no other place to store them, space will be made available near the township's recycling area on a first-come, first-served basis and owners must sign a waiver absolving the township in the event of any damage.
In other business, Zerbe Township received word its recent application to PennVEST for sewer plant funding was not approved. It will be resubmitted and they expect a decision in January.
Mazer was re-appointed as the township's representative to the Northumberland County Tax Collection Committee, with supervisor Gene Geise named as alternate.
Supervisors announced fall cleanup is underway until Nov. 30. Each property is limited to one pay loader bucketful of waste to be picked up. Leaves and yard waste may also be brought to the respective piles at the salt shed. If a residence is missed, owners are asked to contact the township office.
Zerbe Township is compiling a list of snow plow drivers who will be available as needed during winter storms. If interested, contact the township office.
The recreation committee will again sponsor the annual Community Christmas Event at 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16, at the Foundry Recreation Area at which time the township Christmas tree will be illuminated and there will be an appearance by Santa Claus.
The township office will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 22, for Thanksgiving and Monday, Nov. 26, for the first day of deer season.
