Referee sponsors sought for tourney

COAL TOWNSHIP - Tournament directors Brian Persing and Chris Venna announced they are looking for local businesses to make monetary donations to help pay for PIAA officials to work the 11th annual Salvation Army Adult Basketball Tournament, set for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, April 11, 12 and 13, at the Shamokin Area Middle-High School gym.

In addition to men's teams participating, this year the tournament is looking to branch out and run a women's bracket as well.

"For more than 10 years, local PIAA officials have donated their time to work more than 200 games without asking for a dime," Persing said. "This year, we would like to recognize that as we are looking for sponsors for the upcoming tourney."

Businesses or individuals can be a sponsor for $100. A banner with the sponsors' names on it will be hung in the gym during the tournament, he said.

The tournament will again feature a double-elimination format. Entry fee per team is $125 and the deadline to register is March 31.

Interested teams should contact Venna at 570-205-1144 for more information.
