Two services will mark the installation of Bishop Ronald W. Gainer as the 11th Bishop of Harrisburg - a solemn vespers service and the Mass of Installation. Each will be held at a different location and provide an opportunity for prayers with the bishop.
The solemn vespers service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, at Holy Name of Jesus Church, 6150 Allentown Blvd, Harrisburg.
The Mass of Installation is scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 19. It will be held at St. Patrick Cathedral, 212 State St,, Harrisburg. The Mass will be a ticketed event.
The eve of the installation Mass is a significant time for prayer, according to information provided
by the diocese. The vespers service will be open to the public and provide the opportunity for faithful to pray with the bishop.
Vespers, also called evening prayer, is part of the Liturgy of the Hours, also known as the Divine Office. The service consists of the singing of hymns, psalms, Bible readings and prayers. A reception will follow. It is expected that the service will be streamed live on the diocesan website, www.hbgdiocese.org.
Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, of Philadelphia, will preside over the installation Mass. Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, the papal representative to the United States, along with numerous Catholic bishops and clergy from around the country are also expected to take part. Significant attendance of clergy is expected from the dioceses of Harrisburg, Lexington, Allentown and Philadelphia for this ticketed event. Representatives of local parishes and ministries will also be invited.
Plans for a live television, radio and web broadcast of the installation to allow the public to view and pray along with Gainer are being developed. Prayer resources for both services are expected to be available on the diocesan website for download to assist with prayer at home during the services.
