A former Shamokin woman was featured in an annual publication of the Department of Defense that highlights the work of those in all branches of the military.

Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Sandra Derk had two photographs and article about her service and plans in Futures magazine.

The first picture shows her doing a yoga pose and the second shows her speaking with a Coast Guard officer before heading into the Supreme Court.

According to the article, Derk is working toward her bachelor's degree and is in a pre-law major. She works in the legal offices at Coast Guard headquarters in Washington, D.C., where she assists lawyers in processing cases and notarizes official documents for government employees.

"Many lawyers hope they'll one day have a job that brings them to the iconic steps of the Supreme Court of the United States. Sandra already does," the article reads.

She serves as a liaison between the Coast Guard and the Supreme Court, and facilitates Coast Guard lawyers' admittance to the Supreme Court Bar, according to Futures.

She told the magazine, "I am getting the type of experience even people in law school don't get. It's basically an amazing internship that's full time, plus I get paid."
