Local representatives commented Friday on state Commonwealth Court Judge Bernard L. McGinley's ruling Friday that strikes down a requirement that nearly all of the state's 8.2 million voters show photo identification at the polls.
McGinley said the bill imposes an unreasonable burden on the right to vote and that officials failed to demonstrate the need for it.
State Rep. Kurt Masser (R-107) said he's anticipating an appeal.
"This thing just seems to drag on forever," Masser said Friday when reached for comment.
A Republican, Masser voted against the Voter ID bill that was signed into law in March 2012. He did so not because of its intent, but because of its timing a little more than a month before the primary election.
He said Friday that he still believes in the law.
"In this day and age, I don't think it's too much to ask for an ID," Masser said. "We don't want to make it difficult for anyone to vote, but there's also folks who have a real concern that one person, one vote means something."
State Rep. Lynda Schlegel-Culver (R-108), who voted in favor of the bill, said Friday evening she hadn't read the ruling, but suspects there will be an appeal.
"We have a few constituents that will be happy that this is the ruling and a few that will be upset. We'll just have to wait and see when the appeal is set down on it," she said. "I think people are trying to weigh out what they need for some things and not for others.
State Sen. John Gordner (R-27) voted in favor of the bill but did not return calls seeking comment.
