COAL TOWNSHIP - Special Olympics PA Northumberland-Snyder is hosting swimming practice from 6 to 8 p.m. beginning Friday at Shamokin Area High School pool. Practices will be held every Friday unless school is cancelled.

Practices are open to all students with intellectual disabilities age 8 years and older. The Shamokin Area High School pool is a perfect venue for beginner swimmers and swimmers who want to improve their strokes.

Volunteers teach swimming to beginners and assist more experienced swimmers in stroke development.

Special Olympics offers meaningful competition pitting athletes of equal ability in events. Competition opportunities are available at various levels from walking in the shallow end of the pool, assisted swimming and swimming with float belts to more traditional free, back, breast and butterfly events.

Students without intellectual disabilities may attend practices as Unified Partners. They may learn how to swim, improve strokes and enjoy the company of their peers with intellectual disabilities. Unified Partners compete as part of relays.

Students without intellectual disabilities may also attend practices as volunteers. Volunteers with life guard certification are especially needed.

All students interested in attending practices must have a completed application/physical on file with Special Olympics PA. Unified Partners must also have a volunteer application completed prior to attending practices. Students interested in volunteering must complete the volunteer application and paperwork.

Applications can be mailed to Arden Miller, 122 Independence St., Selinsgrove 17870 or swazeyr_millera@verizon.net 570-374-5369. Full schedules will be sent to those interested.
