New Mount Carmel mayor looking forward to working with council

MOUNT CARMEL - New Mayor Philip "Bing" Cimino told borough council members at his first public meeting Monday he is looking forward to working with them over the next four years.

Cimino made his comments after he, councilmen Robert Shirmer, Dave Fantini, Clem Plisiewicz and Tony Matulewicz and tax collector Deborah M. Kaleta were sworn in by Magisterial District Judge Hugh A. Jones, Mount Carmel.

Shirmer, Plisiewicz and Matulewicz were re-elected while Cimino, Fantini and Kaleta are serving their first terms.

Cimino said he'd like to see the town more involved in activities and suggested a New Year's Eve celebration at the end of this year.

He'd also like to see more cooperation between various boards.

Cimino was joined by his wife, Charmange, his grandson Trevor and his goddaughter, Karissa Koronkiewicz, 7. Plisiewicz was joined by his wife, Mary Ann. Fantini was joined by his wife, Catherine.

During the brief 10-minute meeting, council approved Matulewicz as president again and Councilman Leroy "Chico" Moser as vice president again.

Matulewicz and Moser thanked council for their nominations and approvals.

"It's a position of trust," Matulewicz said. "I hope I can live up to it."

Moser said the council in the last four years has been "the best I ever have been involved with. I appreciate the opportunity to work with you again."

They also re-appointed borough manager Edward T. Cuff III as secretary and Megan Janolek as treasurer.

In other business:

- Mary McCarthy, of the Northumberland County Adult Probation Department, will be a special guest speaker at the Mount Carmel Community Watch meeting. It will be held at 6:30 p.m. at borough hall, Fourth and Vine streets.

- Council members entered into executive session after they adjourned to discuss the expired police contracts.
