Book club to begin discussion
COAL TOWNSHIP - St. John's United Methodist Church's Book and Breakfast Club will discuss its sixth book, "Unveiling Mary Magdalene" by Liz Curtis Higgs, at 9:15 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, in the church parsonage, 1218 W. Arch St.
Higgs was the speaker at the 2013 fall women's retreat at Sandy Cove, in North East, Md.
All women in the community are welcome to join in one or all of the 14-week study. For more information or to register, call Pastor Karyn Fisher 570-648-2842. The cost for the book for the 14-week session is $15.
Choir to present concert
SHAMOKIN - The Archbishop Curley High School Choir will present a Christmas season concert at Mother Cabrini Church, 214 N. Shamokin St., at 4 p.m. Sunday.
Also featured will be the school's handbell ringers.
Archbishop Curley High School is an all-boys Catholic high school in Baltimore. The choir has performed with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra at Myerhoff Symphony Hall, at the College of Notre Dame of Maryland and at the University of Maryland in Baltimore.
The concert is free, but a free-will offering will be received. The choristers will meet with people at a post-concert reception in the church hall.
The public is welcome.
Changing of the Colors scheduled
MOUNT CARMEL - The Mount Carmel Area Joint Veterans Committee will holds its Changing of the Colors flag ceremony at 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19, at Second and Oak streets.
The flag will be raised in memory and honor of John F. Shimock Jr., who served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Area veterans and the public are invited.
Historical society meets Wednesday
MOUNT CARMEL - Nomination and election of officers will be held at a meeting of the Mount Carmel Historical Society to be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Mount Carmel Area Public Library.
Former Mount Carmel Borough Mayor J. Kevin Jones will give a presentation at the meeting.
