Light snow that accumulated during the morning commute Thursday caused several accidents and traffic delays.
Accidents involving injury were reported on several area roads, including Route 901, between Excelsior and Ranshaw, and on Irish Valley Road in Shamokin Township. Also, Locust Gap Highway, between Route 54 and Mount Carmel, was closed for a time when vehicles became disabled on a hill at Dooleyville.
Route 901 crash
Four people, including a 2-year-old boy, were injured in a two-vehicle accident on Route 901, east of Industrial Park Road.
According to Coal Township police, a Chevrolet Cavalier, operated by Heather Nahodil, 26, of Gap, was traveling west on Route 901 when it crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with a Ford Escape operated by Robin Klinger, 51, of Trevorton. The vehicles came to rest on the east bound shoulder. The drivers and both of Naholdil's passengers, the child and Tyler Howett, 27, of Gap, were transported to Geisinger-Shamokin Area Community Hospital (G-SACH).
Condition updates were not available at press time.
Irish Valley crash
According to state police in Stonington, a Kia Sorento traveling too fast for road conditions went out of control and hit a tree while the driver was attempting to negotiate a left-hand curve near Schoolhouse Road.
The vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic, exited the west bound shoulder and hit an embankment, then reentered the road, crossed both lanes of traffic and exited the east bound shoulder, where it hit a PennDOT sign and the tree.
The driver, William Krumbine, 55, Paxinos, who was not wearing a seat belt, suffered a minor injury and was transported to G-SACH.
A condition update was not available at press time.
The vehicle was towed because of significant front-end damage.
Krumbine was cited for driving too fast for road conditions.
Forecast
Temperatures Thursday afternoon climbed into the mid-30s, melting most of the early-morning snow. Today is expected to be sunny with highs in the mid-30s. Temperatures could climb above 40 degrees Saturday; however, the "warm" weather will be short-lived. Colder weather with high temperatures below freezing is forecast to move into the area Monday and remain throughout the week.
