WILKES-BARRE - A Mount Carmel man was sentenced Tuesday in federal court to serve one year probation and pay a $3,872 fine for embezzling more than $7,000 from a local chapter of the United Steelworkers union.
Bernard C. Nolter Jr., who pleaded guilty in August to false entry or willful concealment of books and records, was sentenced by U.S. Magistrate Judge William I. Arbuckle.
Nolter was charged with embezzling $7,047.23 from AFL-CIO Local 635, in which authorities said he made a false entry in the financial records to the Secretary of Labor during the fiscal year ending Dec. 31, 2011.
In addition to probation and the fine, Nolter must comply with numerous supervision conditions. Nolter, who must pay the fine within 10 months, shall not incur any new credit charges or open additional lines of credit without the approval of his probation officer unless the defendant is in compliance with the installment schedule for the payment of the fine or special assessment. He also must provide his probation officer with access to any required financial information and shall apply all monies received from income tax refunds, lottery winnings, judgments and/or other anticipated or unexpected financial gains to the outstanding court-ordered financial obligation.
Nolter, who is free, also must abstain from the use of alcohol and cannot possess a controlled substance or firearm.
