Veterans eligible for diploma

SUNBURY - Northumberland County Veterans Affairs Department reminds area school districts about "Operation Recognition," a program that authorizes the issuance of high school diplomas to any honorably discharged U.S. military veteran who served in World War II, the Korean War or the Vietnam War.

In order to recognize and honor veterans who left high school prior to graduation to serve in the wars, a diploma can be granted to veterans who:

- Were honorably discharged from the U.S. Armed Forces;

- Served in the U.S. military between Sept. 16, 1940 and Dec. 31, 1946, June 27, 1950 and Jan. 30, 1955, Feb. 28, 1961 and May 7, 1975;

- Attended high school between 1937 and 1946, would have graduated 1941 to 1950; between 1947 and 1955, graduating 1951-1957; between 1958 and 1975, graduating 1961-1975;

- Legal resident of a school district or of preceding school district, which is an optional requirement.

Diplomas may also be awarded posthumously.
