COAL TOWNSHIP - A township family is temporarily displaced following a fire Monday afternoon at State and Poplar streets in the Ferndale section.
The fire at 1101 W. State St. was reported at 2:48 p.m. Firefighters ran two hoses into the home to knock down the flames: one into the basement where the fire ignited and a second on the first floor.
While there was no noticeable fire damage to the exterior of the home, there was heavy smoke.
The fire was brought under control about 30 minutes after it was reported.
The home is owned by Rita and Sam Jeremiah. Two of their sons, Brian and Tyler, were home when the fire ignited, according to Coal Township Assistant Chief Mike Timco.
Coal Township Fire Department's fire marshal will investigate to determine a cause.
"It does not appear to be suspicious," Timco said.
No one was injured.
Timco said the home's basement sustained fire, smoke and water damage, while the rest of the home sustained smoke and water damage. Electric service to the home was shut off, he said.
Bruce Rogers, Shamokin Fire Bureau battalion chief, was in the area when the fire was reported and took initial control of the scene until Timco's arrival.
Firefighters from Coal Township, Shamokin and Kulpmont responded. AREA Services ambulance personnel also responded.
It is the second fire in the township in the past five days. A home on Independence Street was destroyed by fire on Thursday.
