MOUNT CARMEL - Citing quality issues, the state Department of Transportation (PennDOT) dispatched crews Thursday to repair three short sections of roadway in the borough that were resurfaced last year.
Rick Mason, public information officer for PennDOT District 3-0, said Friday the work was completed within one day by New Enterprise Stone and Lime Co. Inc.
The work was done at the corner of East Avenue and Market Street (Route 61), on South Market Street from Third to Fifth streets and on Third Street from Hickory to Oak streets.
Traffic was restricted to a single lane through the
work zones, with flaggers controlling traffic flow, Mason said.
The original $728,000 contract was for resurfacing, but there were "quality issues with the materials placed" in the spots that were being repaired Friday, he said.
The project this week was done at no cost to the state taxpayers; the contractor is covering the costs of this week's repairs.
There was some line painting that was expected to be completed Friday, Mason said.
The News-Item received some complaints on the construction, but borough manager Edward T. Cuff said there were no calls to his office complaining.
However, one woman did contact him about a note on her door from PennDOT telling residents not to park in those sections Thursday.
"They (PennDOT officials) didn't let us know about it. It's a state road and basically they do what they want to do. We can't do anything about it," Cuff said.
No other repair work is planned at this time, Mason said.
