SHAMOKIN - A city church is opening its doors to local students beginning today, offering free lunch and "engaging educational programs" each week.
Fliers were recently sent home with an estimated 3,000 students announcing the free Saturday lunches for students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade throughout the 2013-14 school year, according to the program advisor.
It's held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. weekly at St. John's United Church of Christ, 117 N. Eighth St.
Dave Searles, a deep sea diver, will give a presentation today on oceanic archaeology, and each student present will go home with a shark's tooth.
Upcoming programs include bicycle safety, Zumba and personal safety.
The free Saturday lunch program is funded by Pennsylvania Department of Education and the Child Care Food Program.
