Sobriety checkpoints planned
POTTSVILLE - The North Central Highway Safety Network's Regional DUI Enforcement Group and the Coal Township Police Department will be conducting roving patrols and sobriety checkpoints on Routes 61, 125, 225, 54, 487, 901 and 147 or other connecting roadways to municipalities through September.
Travelers are reminded to report drunk drivers by dialing 911. To report underage drinking, call 1-888-under-21.
The patrols and checkpoints are funded through the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and the National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Help with veterans benefits offered
SUNBURY - Anyone needing help or seeking information about accessing veteran benefits is encouraged to contact the Northumberland County Veterans Affairs office.
There are trained, accredited staff ready to help veterans through the process. They have the most up-to-date information available about applying for benefits, current requirements and any recent changes made in the process.
There's no need to pay an attorney, insurance company or personal financial planner to apply for benefits.

Luncheon canceled
SHAMOKIN - The monthly luncheon of the Shamokin High School Class of 1956 is canceled for September.
They will meet at 1 p.m. Oct. 8 at Amato's Pizza in Northumberland.
