ASHLAND - Fifteen people were displaced from their homes following a fire at 3 a.m. Monday in an apartment building at 714 W. Centre St.

In a telephone interview Monday, Ashland fire Chief Phil Groody said that the fire was under control approximately 15 minutes after the time of dispatch.

"The fire was contained to the rear of the building in a ground-floor apartment," Groody said.

Groody said he and state police fire marshal Trooper John F. Burns are investigating the fire.

The cause of the fire is unknown. There were no injuries reported.

According to a press release from Jennifer LoConte, regional communications officer for the American Red Cross, the American Red Cross Greater Schuylkill Chapter responded to the apartment building fire and provided food and lodging for six families, including nine adults and six children.

"The Red Cross will follow up with the families if additional services are needed," LoConte said.

Groody said the families were unable to enter their homes after the fire because the electricity was disconnected. When the power is reestablished, they can return to their homes, he said.
