MOUNT CARMEL - Sigma Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International recently donated several books to benefit the Mount Carmel Area Elementary School library.
Started by Sigma Chapter in 2006, the "Cat in the Hat" book fund project collects membership donations at three scheduled meetings each year. The funds are earmarked to purchase books for a particular school district library within Sigma Chapter's range of membership, which includes Columbia, Montour, Northumberland, Snyder and Union counties.
Joy Knapik, of Shamokin, serves a chair for this and other Sigma Chapter projects. Dolores Honecker, a Sigma sister from Mount Carmel, served as liaison between the Sigma Chapter and the school district to arrange for the purchase and delivery of the selected books.
On Monday, Honecker was joined by Sigma Chapter President Ann Nowaskie, of Coal Township, to present the books to Susan Nestico, Mount Carmel Area Elementary School principal, in the school's library.
The "Cat in the Hat" book fund collection is scheduled to continue through 2016.
Delta Kappa Gamma Society is an international organization of key female educators with about 100,000 members in eighteen countries.
