No school Friday for SASD

COAL TOWNSHIP - There will be no school Friday for Shamokin Area School District students. Teachers will be participating in an in-service day.

Online registration closes for walk

BEAR GAP - Online registration has closed for the PCOS Awareness 5K Mini Walk, scheduled for Sunday at the Weiser State Forest, Roaring Creek Tract. However, participants can still register on walk day. Registration, which costs $20, will be at 8 a.m.

The walk begins at 9 a.m. Those who register on walk day will get a free goody bag and a free gift. Bottled iced water and a light snack will be provided.

The walk has been organized to raise money and awareness for PCOS, or polycystic ovary syndrome.

Salvation Army taking applications

SHAMOKIN - The Salvation Army will be taking applications for Christmas food and toy assistance, by appointment only, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, Oct. 23 to 25. To make an appointment, call 644-0486.

Flag retirement ceremony Sunday

MOUNT CARMEL - The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 356 and Boy Scout Troop 174 will hold a flag retirement ceremony at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the Mount Carmel Recreation Complex near the Anthracite Baseball Field.

Old and torn flags will be properly disposed of by burning during the ceremony, which will be conducted by the Elks and Scouts.

The public in invited. People can bring their flags for burning. Flags can also be dropped off at 121 N. Hickory St., Mount Carmel

Clover Hose Company and Mount Carmel fire police will also be in attendance.
