HARRISBURG - SCI-Coal Township has a new superintendent.

The appointment of Vincent F. Mooney Jr., a 28-year corrections veteran, was announced Thursday by John E. Wetzel, secretary of corrections. It became effective April 19.

"Vince's decisiveness when faced with difficult choices is an asset the department recognizes. While always ensuring public safety, he will empower employees to make the right choices in order to provide rehabilitation to the inmates in their care," Wetzel said.

Mooney began his corrections career as a corrections officer at SCI Dallas in 1985 and became a sergeant in 1990. He moved to SCI-Mahanoy when he was promoted to lieutenant in 1993.

In 1998, he became an inspection lieutenant at Central Office, and returned to SCI-Mahanoy as a captain in 2000. In 2005, he returned to SCI-Dallas as major of the guard. Two years later, he was promoted to deputy superintendent of facility management at SCI-Coal Township, and in the same year he returned to SCI-Dallas as deputy superintendent of facility management.

During his tenure at SCI Dallas, Mooney served as interim warden at Lackawanna County Jail. Upon his return to SCI-Dallas, he was named as deputy superintendent of centralized services.

Mooney is a veteran of the U.S. Army.
