Field Day event set for Tuesday at MCA

MOUNT CARMEL - Mount Carmel Area High School's annual Field Day event will be held Tuesday at the Silver Bowl prior to the home track meet against Central Columbia.

After following the MCA band from the high school to the stadium, the Field Day candidates will be escorted to the middle of the football field by senior members of the boys track team. The Field Day queen will be crowned at approximately 3:15 p.m., with the track meet starting at 4 p.m. Six Field Day candidates were chosen by their peers - three seniors, two juniors, and a sophomore. The candidates are:

Alex McLeod, senior, is a daughter of Tony McLeod and Tracy McLeod, of Kulpmont. Her activities include soccer, school musicals, marching band, symphonic band, jazz band, student council, peer mediation, Interact club, SADD club, science club, news reporting, Spanish club and pep club. She is the Big Red Band drum major, band librarian, secretary of both the art club and the senior class, and chorus vice president. She is a member of the National Honor Society and a past Junior High Pride award recipient. She enjoys music, theater and reading. Alex plans to attend Duquesne University to major in speech language pathology.

Nicole Purcell, senior, is a daughter of Kenneth and Tara Purcell, of Kulpmont. Her activities include volleyball, science club, chemistry club, chorus, Odyssey of the Mind, Science Olympiad, environthon and yearbook. She is also a yearbook photographer and president of both studio and Interact clubs. She was previously named Rotary Student of the Month, is a member of the National Honor Society and is on the distinguished honor roll. She will attend Juniata University to major in criminology with a double minor in photography and web design.

Tori Wariki, senior, is a daughter of Stan and Charlene Wariki, of Kulpmont. She is involved in FTA, FNA, Interact, SADD and tech ed clubs. She is an honor student and was a part of homecoming and Field Day court since her sophomore year. Her interests include running, baking, motorcycling and rock climbing. She plans are to attend college for special education.

Darla Hood, junior, is a daughter of Michael and Christine Hood, of Kulpmont. She is a member of yearbook, Latin club, FTA, FNA and pep club, and plays basketball and volleyball. She is on the distinguished honor roll and is a member of the National Honor Society. She enjoys playing basketball, volleyball, shopping and babysitting her niece, Aubrie. She plans to attend a two- or four-year college.

Jesse Gibson, junior, who resides in Mount Carmel, is a daughter of Tammy Gibson and Edward Morales. Her activities include varsity basketball and varsity track and field. She also teaches dance at the Motivation Station in Mount Carmel. She is on the distinguished honor roll and her interests include writing poetry, singing and playing basketball. Her plans are to attend a four-year college to major in business.

Maliyah Edwards, sophomore, is a daughter of Jennifer Brown and stepdaughter of Ronald Brown. She is a member of the National Honor Society and is involved in varsity cheerleading, basketball and wrestling cheerleading. Her interests include reading and playing with her pet bunny. She plans to become a zoologist.
