James A. Garfield Camp No. 34, Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War, held its quarterly meeting March 13 at the Lithuanian Social Club at which they annonced activities for the Memorial Day holiday as well as other organization news.
Flags will be placed on the graves of Civil War and Spanish-American War veterans Wednesday, May 22. On Sunday, May 26, the "Changing of the Colors" flag ceremony will be held in honor and memory of George P. Parry, who attained the rank of second lieutenant and served in Companies C and E, 55th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry.
During Mount Carmel's Memorial Day program, a service will be held in Mount Carmel Cemetery at the grave of Oscar H. Sillyman, who served as a sergeant with both Company B, 6th Regiment, Militia of 1862 and Company B, 27th Regiment, Militia of 1863.
Eagle Scout Commendation Certificates were sent for Brandon Greco, Mackenzie Greco and Joseph Greco, of Mount Carmel Boy Scout Troop 174. The certificates honoring their achievement will be presented at a later date.
The 133rd annual Pennsylvania Department Encampment will be held in Gettysburg June 27-30. The camp authorized a full page advertisement in the Encampment booklet. The 57th annual Grand Army of the Republic Remembrance Day parade will be held Saturday, November 23 in Gettysburg.
This year, Garfield Camp will be celebrating in 130th anniversary. The camp formed on May 9, 1883 and was charged August 9 that year. It is the oldest veteran affiliated organization in Mount Carmel.
Treasurer Huge Jones reported that the Camp is in good financial order. Commander David Berezovske let the camp in the Pledge of Allegiance and Chaplain Harry White Jr., gave the opening and closing prayer.
The next meeting at Garfield Camp will be Wednesday, May 8 at 7:30 p.m. at the Lithuanian Social Club.
