SHAMOKIN - City council voted during a special meeting Monday to approve the purchase of a new pump for Lawton W. Shroyer Memorial Swimming Pool on Rock Street.

The council and mayor accepted the lowest qualifying bid from Stoneridge Inc., of Feasterville - $55,700 if installed on a three-day schedule, or $59,300 in two days with some work performed during nighttime.

The timeline council and the contractor ultimately will follow will depend on when the pump is delivered.

Bids of $58,000/$59,900 from Bognet Inc., Hazleton, and $59,923/$49,990 from Linde Corp., Pittston, were also received. Frank Garrigan, the city's attorney for Community Development Block Grant funding, advised that errors in Linde's bid package disqualified it.

There is a chance that when the pool opens, the old pump could still be in use. That pump is well-worn and its malfunction had closed the pool temporarily in the past.

An opening date for the pool has not yet been set, but it generally follows the summertime closing of area schools.

No other business was conducted during Monday's brief meeting.
