Catawissa native helps upgrade USS Ronald Reagan

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Benjamin J. Dumbaugh, a son of Jamie L. and Bryan M. Dumbaugh, of Catawissa, is assigned to aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), which recently departed for its San Diego home after 14 months of work at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility in Bremerton, Wash.

Dumbaugh, others sailors, shipyard workers and contractors completed what the Navy calls a Docked Planned Incremental Availability and peformed $218 million in maintenance and upgraded systems, much of it performed in dry dock. Projects ranged from preserving the ship's exterior and island, complete overhaul of its internal computer network, and work on the main engines and rudders.

The Regan will rejoin the West Coast deployment cycle and will be homeported at Naval Base Coronado.

Dumbaugh is a 2009 graduate of Southern Columbia Area High School of Catawissa and joined the Navy in February 2010.
