Anniversary committee meeting
Meeting, Shamokin's 150th Anniversary Committee, 7 p.m. Wednesday, Independence Fire Association, Arch and Market streets, Shamokin. Plans being formed for anniversary in 2014. Discussions on fundraising and on celebration event. Volunteers are needed, and the public is welcome and encouraged to attend.
Community cleanup
A community cleanup organized by fourth-grade Shamokin Area Elementary student Rosalind Kane will be held at 2 p.m. April 28. Volunteers will meet at the bandshell in Shamokin. This is the third event planned by Rosalind in her effort to keep the Shamokin and Coal Township area clean. Participants are asked to bring a non-perishable food item, which will be donated to Manna for Many food bank. Bring gloves, comfortable walking shoes and a smile. Garbage bags will be provided. Everyone is invited to join. Local sports teams, club members and organizations are asked to show their community spirit.
Anthracite Coalympics
The "2013 Anthracite Coalympics" is a fundraiser set for 9 a.m. May 4 at the Bunker Hill Field Complex, Shamokin. Admission is free. Event registration is $15. Adult events include 2K run, home run derby, tug of war, hot dog eating contest, ultimate Frisbee, obstacle course, horseshoe tournament, beer pong, coal region jeopardy and keg toss. Children's events are free, but donations are welcome. They include an obstacle course, beanbag toss, long jump, race, scavenger hunt, face painting. There will also be food and adult beverages, an awards ceremony and live music all day. Vendors and volunteers are needed. Heritage Festival of the Arts
The annual Anthracite Heritage Festival of the Arts, Market Street, Shamokin, will kick off at 6:30 p.m. May 24 with a parade followed by memorial luminaries and Marla & the Juniper Street Band will close the first night, which ends at 10 p.m. Saturday's hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and include a 5K race. Registrated will be held at 7:30 a.m. at Shamokin Area High School, Coal Township. The race begins at 9 a.m.. Also part of the festival are trolley and carriage tours, starting at 11 a.m. and continuing every 30 minutes until 3:30 p.m. Cost is $8. Tickets are available at the information booth across from the stage. Historical cemetery tours will also return this year at 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 and are available at the cemetery. LARRC seeks volunteers
Members of Lower Anthracite Regional Recreation Committee (LARRC) are working toward constructing a recreation area near Mountain View: A Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, including two soccer fields, batting cages, a walking track and a playground. Volunteers are needed to donate time, machines, craftsmanship and any other services.
