SHAMOKIN - Charlie Verano has announced he is seeking the Republican nomination for a seat on Shamokin City Council in the primary election on May 21.
Verano is a lifelong resident of Shamokin. Jeanette, his wife of 27 years, has been employed by Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy in Shamokin for more than 20 years. Verano was employed by Aqua Water Company for 26 years until his retirement in February 2012. He is now employed by Durdach Bros Inc. part time in retail sales.
Verano is vice chairman of the Shamokin Redevelopment Authority, a member of the Shamokin Area Industrial Development Authority and a member of the Shamokin Zoning Board, He was president and recording secretary of Utility Workers Union of American for 22 years.
Verano is a life member of Friendship Fire company and a social member of Rescue Fire Company of Shamokin and East End Fire Company in Coal Township. He is an active member and worships at Mother Cabrini Church, Shamokin.
"I would be proud to serve the people of Shamokin because Shamokin has always good to me and my family," Verano said. "There is much work to be done if I receive the nomination, but I will name the things that will be my top priority. First, financially, we must be able to live within our means. Second, the blight problems are very serious; all entrances into the city and within Shamokin need to be addressed. Third, our business district needs attention, and we as leaders must not neglect is because it is the hub of the city. Also, I want the young people to know they will not be left out. We need better recreation facilities, and I will seek their input on how to accomplish this."
He thanked all those who signed his nomination petition and urged voters to go to the polls May 21.
