SHAMOKIN - Aqua Pennsylvania Inc.'s, Roaring Creek Division (Aqua) will begin two major main pipe replacement projects this spring totaling more than $1.6 million to improve system reliability and water flows, including that used for firefighting in three Northumberland County municipalities, the company reported in a press release.

On Monday, crews began a five-month, $940,000 transmission main project in Mount Carmel Borough and Mount Carmel Township that will replace approximately 5,400 feet of old 4- and 6-inch cast iron pipe with new 8-inch ductile iron pipe on Fifth Street. The work starts at the intersection with Oak Street and travels west on Fifth Street to the intersection at the Locust Gap Highway. Also, approximately 250 feet of new 12-inch ductile iron pipe will be installed along Locust Gap Highway between Fifth and Third streets.

Aqua will begin a $700,000, 4,700-foot construction project in Tharptown in April that will replace old and undersized mains with new 8- and 12-inch ductile iron pipe along Center Street. The five-month project spans Center Street from Johns Estate Road to its southernmost point where it joins Route 61.

Aqua will also replace water services and fire hydrants on both projects. Construction will take place weekdays between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Patrick Burke, regional manager, Northeast and Central Operations, said Aqua has $16 million in capital improvements planned in our Roaring Creek Division this year.

Aqua Pennsylvania's Roaring Creek Division serves a population of 52,000 in Adams, Columbia, Cumberland, Juniata, Northumberland, Schuylkill, and Snyder counties. Overall, the company serves approximately 1.4 million residents in 30 counties throughout Pennsylvania.
