Replacement of bridge planned

MONTOURSVILLE - A PennDOT bridge crew in Columbia County will begin the replacement of an aging bridge on Route 3008 (Bear Gap Road) in Cleveland Township starting the second week of April.

The existing 47-foot-long bridge over Mugser Run was built in 1934 and is currently classified as structurally deficient.

The bridge is located about a quarter mile east of the intersection with Route 3001 (Fisherdale Road).

The bridge will be replaced on the existing alignment with a new precast arch culvert, similar to a precast box culvert. The PennDOT crew will remove the existing structure and prepare the site for the precast arch, which will be delivered and set by a private contractor. The PennDOT crew will then reconstruct the roadway approaches and perform all other work to finish the project and reopen the road.

A detour will be in effect starting Monday, April 8. The detour will follow Fisherdale Road, Middle Road and Route 42.

Construction is expected to take up to eight weeks to complete, with the new bridge opened to traffic by June 1.

Lenten confessions scheduled

During the Great Fast (Lent), priests of the South Anthracite Deanery of the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia will visit neighboring churches to offer the Holy Mystery of Penance.

Confessions will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday at Assumption BVM, Centralia Heights, Monsignor James T. Melnic; SS Peter and Paul, Mount Carmel, the Rev. Mark Fesniak and Monsignor Myron Grabowsky, and Transfiguration of Our Lord, Shamokin, the Rev. Archpriest Michael Hutsko and the Rev. Roman Pitula.
