STONINGTON - Shamokin Township officials discussed problems at their monthly meeting Wednesday night with property owners allowing rainwater to run off their driveways and cause damage to township roads.

Solicitor James Bathgate proposed a minimal penalty for anyone who allows such conditions. He suggested property owners pay for any damage.

He said he will draft procedures that the township supervisors will follow to address problems. The procedures will be ready for the next meeting. No details on requirements for property owners paying for damages have existed since 2000, and the supervisors agreed that a new policy should be in place.

At February's meeting, supervisors discussed what was described in the minutes as a "serious problem" with water runoff involving a driveway along Old Reading Road.

In other business, a 20-ton trailer was purchased for $5,610. The cost was split between Shamokin, Upper Augusta and Rockefeller townships.

Roadster Jon Clemens said the cinder bin has been filled and is ready for next winter.

Supervisor John Klinger said the township is awaiting information about a grant regarding purchase of generators for Stonington Fire Company and the municipal authority. The fire company has been approved as an evacuation center.
