SHAMOKIN - To support its Art About Town Project, the Northumberland County Council for the Arts and Humanities (NCCAH) will participate in the unique 24-hour online fundraiser called Raise the Region on Tuesday.
Raise the Region is a fundraising event of the First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania (FCFP). Blaise Alexander Family Dealerships has committed $125,000 in matching funds that will be applied to each donation to participating nonprofit organizations.
NCCAH will use donations made during the 24-hour event to continue its Shamokin mural project. The first mural, depicting the rich heritage of the coal region, was completed last year on the side of the Bressi and Martin Real Estate building at Independence and Eighth streets. NCCAH hopes to continue to produce murals to beautify buildings in Shamokin and show pride in local history through art.
Each mural is extremely time intensive and expensive to produce, the council reports. The first mural was completed thanks to a collaborative effort of several artists led by Matt Leavens. The next mural will be hung near the first and is nearly complete. The new mural, painted by artist Claude Harrington, continues a coal region theme.
Interested donors can support this effort by donating at www.raisetheregion.org from noon to 11:59 p.m. Tuesday. Look for NCCAH among the listed nonprofits.
