NEW BERLIN - Grief counselors were available at Shikellamy High School Sunday afternoon as the district copes with the loss of a student involved in a rollover accident Friday morning.
A nursing supervisor at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, confirmed Sunday that Travis Tillett died Saturday from injuries sustained in the accident. Tillett was one of four students injured in the 8:45 a.m. crash on Route 304, near Arrowhead Road, as the students headed to SUN Area Technical Institute for classes.
The Daily Item, Sunbury, reported the names of the students on their website Friday and they were also confirmed by a nursing supervisor while giving a condition report Sunday. State Police only identified one person, Samuel Mull, 19, of Northumberland, a front seat passenger, in their report Friday because the other three students were juveniles.
Mull and another occupant, Robert Coleman, were both listed in fair condition at Geisinger Sunday and the fourth occupant, Justin Miller, was treated and released Friday.
Police said a 2004 Ford Explorer, driven by a 16-year-old Sunbury male, was traveling west on Route 304 at a high rate of speed and attempted to pass another vehicle, when an oncoming vehicle approached in the eastbound lane.
The male steered his vehicle back into the westbound lane and lost control. The Explorer traveled off the north berm of the road and overturned several times, coming to rest on its roof in the eastbound lane. Two passengers were ejected from the vehicle.
In the wake of the accident, Shikellamy school officials postponed Friday's night varsity football game against Selinsgrove. That game is scheduled to be played at 7 p.m. today.
