SUNBURY - Rescuers had to cut the roof off of a car to free the driver after a crash Saturday morning along Route 147 just south of the city.

State police at Stonington said Rodney A. Leitzel, 42, of Herndon, was transported to Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, by Americus Ambulance, but that he was believed to have only minor injuries.

The accident just north of Brush Valley Road in Upper Augusta Township occurred about 9:45 a.m. when Leitzel's northbound 2013 Hyundai Elantra, negotiating a downhill right curve, went off the southbound berm and struck an "Intersection" sign, traveled about 200 feet and struck a "No Passing" sign, then went back across the highway and struck the shale mountainside on the east side. The car came to rest on the edge of the northbound lane on its passenger side.

Police said Leitzel was wearing a seat belt. He will be cited for a traffic violation, police said.
