FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP - A 17-year-old female driver escaped serious injuries Thursday morning when she lost control of the car she was driving in icy weather and snapped a telephone pole, according to Locust Township Police.

Patrolman Patrick McAndrew said the teen was driving a 1998 Buick LeSabre north on Route 487 between Knoebels Amusement Resort and J and D Campground shortly before 9 a.m. when the vehicle slid across the southbound land and hit a Verizon pole before driving into an embankment.

The pole was snapped at the base and fell across the roadway, police said.

The girl was transported via Elysburg Ambulance to Geisinger-Shamokin Area Community Hospital, where she was evaluated, police said.

She was wearing her seatbelt, and McAndrew said there will likely be no traffic violations filed.

Police said the vehicle was totaled. It was towed from the scene by Tire Ranch of Elysburg.

The road was closed for two hours while Verizon crews reinstalled the pole, McAndrew said.

In addition to Locust Township Police, also responding to the scene were fire police from Elysburg and Valley Chemical Fire Company.
